Mastery Before Visibility

Lessons from my highest grossing month

In today’s newsletter I want to talk about the importance of mastery and why you shouldn’t always be in a rush to put yourself out there or ‘blow up’.

There’s a lot of content out there about showing up online, starting a business, building your personal brand, packaging your skills, launching a course etc and I’m all for it generally. I definitely believe in visibility and the strength in it but sometimes it’s actually important to build depth first.

You don’t need to have it all figured out before you start, but in some situations, a certain level of mastery is needed. Mastery comes from time spent doing the work. It means you’ve made mistakes, learned from them, deepened your understanding, and sharpened your skills. That’s what gives your work weight and credibility. Without it, you risk putting yourself out there too soon and feeling frustrated when things don’t take off, or worse, damaging your reputation. Sometimes the focus shouldn’t be on being seen. It should be on getting so good that when you are seen, it actually lands.

We see it in the professions we trust most. Doctors go through years of education and training. Pilots do hundreds of hours of flight school. There’s a process because they know the cost of getting it wrong. And while what you do might not be life or death, the principle still applies. You’re building trust. And people can tell when something is surface level versus when there’s depth.

If you want to be known for something, spend time really knowing it. Study the objections, the numbers, the real-life applications. Understand the theory, but more importantly, understand how it plays out in reality. People who jump out before their time rarely get the best results.

Visbility comes with a weight and an expectation that you have to be adequately prepared for so prepare, and if you’re not currently experiencing the big break that you want maybe you’re currently in that mastery season.
