The Power of Taking Action
Let’s talk about something we often avoid: knowing when it’s time to move on—and acting on it quickly. In my opinion, when you’re thinking about doing something, you shouldn’t let too much time pass before you take action. Some decisions shouldn’t be overanalysed.
I recently recorded my first in-person podcast since January 2024 (you can watch it here), and it reminded me of something crucial: the reason my life looks the way it does today is because I have an action bias.
Let me explain.
When I first considered moving to Dubai, it wasn’t some grand, well-thought-out plan. I listened to a podcast, got curious about salaries, hopped on LinkedIn, found a role, updated my CV, and applied—all within 24 hours. At the time, I wasn’t even serious about moving to Dubai. Fast forward 2.5 years, and so much of what I do now revolves around Dubai. If I had overanalysed it—weighed the pros and cons, thought about whether I should or could move—I probably would’ve talked myself out of it. My life would look completely different today.
The same thing happened when I felt it was time to leave my little paradise in Johannesburg and return to the hustle and bustle of London and Dubai. Once I got the feeling that the season was coming to an end, I packed my bags and was out within a week. When the season was over, it was over, I didn’t waste time mulling over it -I took action.
And this isn’t necessarily about quitting—it’s about doing something about your situation and quickly.
If an idea isn’t working despite your best efforts, take a step back and analyse why it might not be working. Use those insights to pivot and try something new.
If a relationship isn’t working out the way you want it to, come up with an action plan. This could help improve things or, at the very least, give you clarity on whether it’s time to cut ties and move on.
If you don’t feel like the role is right for you, talk to your manager, apply for new jobs but do something.
Having an action bias will help you take control of your life. It’s about moving forward intentionally, rather than letting life happen to you.
Lessons From This Week’s Podcast Guest
In this week’s episode of Building Wealth with No Borders, I sat down with wealth management expert and founder of Wimbledon Wealth, Sophia Bhatti. One trend I’ve noticed with my guests who are often money experts is how often cars come up when discussing their biggest money mistakes. So, if you’re planning to buy a car in the future, think smart: remember, you’re purchasing a liability—make it make sense.
In this week’s episode, we tackled another #WealthWoe which read:
“I’m keen to start building wealth but fear I’ve made it hard for myself. I’ve taken a job as a location intelligence data analyst with an S&P 100 brand in the Netherlands. It’s a great CV boost, but high taxes (nearly 50%!) make building wealth as a UK expat tough. I’d appreciate any advice! ”
If you have any supportive and kind advice to share, please jump into the conversation in the comments on YouTube. If you have a wealth woe you can submit it anonymously here: https://ngl.link/buildingwealthwnb
